Hi, my name is Freda England and I am the art teacher at Lanier. I majored in art at Maryville College long ago. After graduation, I returned to school and added other areas of certification.
I have a son, Benjy. He is 35 years old and lives with his wife Janice. Her education is in music. Benjy is a Tool and Die Maker. My daughter, Megan, is 31 years old. She an dher husband are educated in art therapy. Art Therapy is a blending of Art and Psychology.
Art has taught me the importance of learning by doing. Through many projects, learning is applied. This applicaiton is physical through the act of making the project. It is also emotional because of the personal decisions made as the project is completed.
One book affecting my professional outlook is Howard Gardner's Frames of Mind. He redefines intelligence as abilities controlled by a particular part of the brain, and resulting in a product. (Even if the product is momentary such as a dance performance or ball game). His study of children's creativity is called Project Zoo.
Since our Elememtary Art program started, I have been impressed with our students' creativity and artistic performance.
